LPCMGA 2020 COMMUNITY GRANT AWARDS
By Wendy Shafer
Two Community Grant were awarded in May of 2020 to Reins of Life, Inc. and Queen of All Saints Church/School. Both of the organizations were extremely grateful for the award and have provided updates and pictures, which I share with you below.
Reins of Live wanted to put in a Sensory Garden which would act as a transitional point for our riders, students and participants to take part in before and after lessons. Sensory activities can assist or stand along as an emotional and/or behavioral self-coping practice when transitioning from one activity to the next.

With the grant we were able to get some unique plants like this Hosta, Wiggles and Squiggles! Three varieties of Hosta with native turtleheads. Gaillardia flower heads are so interesting as a 'pop' of color. Lambs Ear is perfect for a sensory garden, with Iris, Lemon Balm & Blanket Flower in background. We bought several varieties of Astible and Coral bells for visual texture and tall slender blooms.
Not pictured/installed but complete are tile labels for the plants. We will also be adding in DIY stepping stones and painted rocks as edging created by our students and riders.
We are in Phase 1 right now of re-opening. Once we have a larger flow of riders and volunteers (Phase 2 and 3) we will take photos of the garden being enjoyed!
Thank you again! We are so excited to have this new addition to the barn.

The Health and Wellness Ministry at Queen of All Saints Church/School wanted to develop a shared community Garden that will include the 7th and 8th graders. The project will provide hands on learning and development of a sustainable food source, growing food in our own church community, and hopefully guide the younger generation to a better understanding of eating healthy and establishing a good work background while caring and maintaining these gardens. The pictures below are from Phase I of the project, phase II and III will be to create a community garden on a much larger scale that can be used by everyone.
The Health & Wellness Ministry wants to thank the Purdue Extension for the generous grant award and will be introducing this project the school if and when they students return.
Next year the LPCMGA will award three $300 grants to organizations within the LaPorte County Community. The Board feels this program has been a success so far and hope to see it continue and grow.
